You probably spend countless hours trying to figure out your boss, spouse, friend, child, parent or the cute guy behind you in line at Starbucks. However, how much time do you spend understanding the one person you are bonded with for life…you?
Nero- Linguistic Programming or NLP unpacks the science of how our thoughts (otherwise known as our programming) influences our feelings and actions, often without us even realizing it!
NLP is based on the fact that…
We do what we do because we feel the way we feel.
We feel the way we feel because we think the way we think.
We think the way we think because we believe the way we believe.
For example, a man loses his job, shuts out his friends and begins yelling at his family. Based on this scenario a typical life coach might advise him on ways he can better communicate with his family or make more time for friends. However, NLP doesn’t just focus on the behavior, NLP focuses on the belief behind the behavior. If the man believes he is worthless without a job then he is going to think that his relationships no longer matter. If he thinks his relationships no longer matter then he feels extremely frustrated whenever his family or friends act in a way that he doesn’t like. When he constantly feels frustrated then he behaves unkindly toward those closest to him.
If this man never understands his own mental map then he is likely to continue in a downward spiral or spend his energy working on changing behaviors rather than addressing the root of the problem. His deep sense of worthlessness is likely to prevent future success in possible job interviews, personal and professional relationships as well as negatively impacting his physical and mental health.
Our unconscious mind is like a child that has been allowed to run free without any guidance. To be our best selfs we need to mindfully and purposefully train our subconscious just as we would develop a child. Just like we would not let a child run havoc through our homes, we must also train our beliefs so they do not run havoc in our lives. We rarely think through our subconscious processes and are even less likely to talk through them with people who can help us. Understanding the beliefs that drive us to give us the tools to face fears, take action, and reach our goals.
Neuro-Linguistic Programming is like a user’s manual for the brain, and learning how to become fluent in the language of your mind allows you to finally understand what you truly want out of life. NLP is the study of excellent communication–both with yourself and with others. It was developed by modeling expert communicators and therapists who achieved results with their clients. NLP is a set of tools and techniques, but it is so much more than that. It is an attitude and a methodology of knowing how to achieve your goals and get results!
Life coaching involves a regularly scheduled 60-minute phone call every two weeks and a check in email in between sessions. During this time we will discuss the following:
